Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in the temporal data in gait pattern by comparing the differences between going barefoot, and after donning posterior leaf spring orthoses(PLS), with the orthosis cut at the metatarsal head are(CPLS), with hinged PLS(HPLS), and with hinged PLS cut at the metatarsal head area (HCPLS).Seven hemiplegic patients who were able to walk unassisted for at least 20 meters without stopping were chosen for this study from those who were either hospitalized or outpatient at the Rehabilitation Hospital, Yonsei University Medical Center from April 6 to May 7, 1999. The gait analysis was done by Vicon 370 three dimensional motion analyzer and it was analyzed by SAS program using the Friedman test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. The results were as follows: 1. There were no significant differences in temporal data between going barefoot and after donning PLS orthoses. 2. There were significant differences in speed and single support when comparing CPLS with going barefoot. 3. There were significant differences in speed between going barefoot and after donning HPLS. 4. There were significant differences in speed, stride length, single support and double support when comparing CPLS and going barefoot. 5 . There were no significant differences in temporal data between PLSand HPLS. 6. There were no significant differences in temporal data between CPLSand HCPLS. The results indicate that there were no statistically significant differences in gait pattern between going barefoot and PLS in seven case studied. There were statistically significant differences in temporal data between going barefoot and CPLS, HCPLS orthosis. These differences were particularly significant in HCPLS.
