Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of the physical focused approach combined with modified constraint induced movement therapy on upper limb movement, finger strength and upper limb function in hemiplegic patients. Methods Ten stroke patients were selected for the study and randomly divided into the experimental (n=5) and the control group (n=5). All participants were evaluated upper limb movement, reach speed, finger strength, and upper limb functions. The intervention was performed 3 times a week for 30 minutes a day for 4 weeks both of before and after intervention. Results In comparison between both of before and after intervention, there was no statistically significant difference in upper limb movement (p>.05) when evaluated with the zebris in the experimental group, but there was a significant difference in the control group (p<.05). In additionally, the finger strength showed statistically significant difference in the experimental group when evaluated by finger touch system in comparison between before and after intervention (p<.05). There was no significant difference in the control group (p>.05), and there was no significant difference in both groups in the upper limb function evaluated by the Manual Function Test (p>.05). Conclusion In this study, the experimental group had the effect with stability of the proximal shoulder muscles, reducing the movement of compensation from the shoulder movement during the upper limb movement and increasing the muscle strength of the fingers. The control group was increased upper limb movement through continuous and repetitive tasks.
