Factors Related to Maternal Stress in Mother with Cerebral Palsy Child

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to identify the affecting factors which maternal stress in mother with cerebral palsy child, and to ascertain differences of severity of disability for cerebral palsy to area of stress in mother with cerebral palsy child. The subjects were 100 mothers with cerebral palsy child who live in Seoul and Kyeonggido. Through a questionnaire survey carried out from July 19, 1999 to August 31, 1999, 100 valid questionnaires were obtained. Information on the maternal stress level, severity of disability for cerebral palsy by PULSES Profile, general characteristics for mother and children with cerebral palsy was gathered. Collected data were analyzed by the independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows: 1. Maternal stress related factor of mother with cerebral palsy child was maternal age. 2. Maternal stress related factor of children with cerebral palsy were birth order and severity of disability. 3. For mother with cerebral palsy child, the most predictive variables for maternal stress were birth order and severity of disability which accounted for 22.0%of the variance. 4. According to severity of disability, maternal stress were significantly difference in except area related treatment of children with cerebral palsy. The results obtained from this study suggest the need for more appropriate timing of early diagnosis and early treatment for children with cerebral palsy to maternal stress release. This goal can be better achieved through maternal education and psychological support combined with early treatment of children with cerebral palsy.
