Effects of lsokinetic Exercise on Hip Extensor and Flexor Strength, Gait Speed and Spasticity in Adults with Stroke

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate isokinetic muscle strength, spasticity, and gait speed in adults with stroke after subjects performed isokinetic muscle strength exercises. The training program of the exercise group consisted of general exercise therapy with isokinetic exercise (n=13). Subjects in the control group (n=13) participated in a general exercise therapy only. The rate of change in gait speeds, gait speeds between groups, and spasticity between groups using MAS were compared before and after training. Paired and independent t-tests were used to test for significance (a=0.05). The results were as follows: First, compared with isokinetic hip flexor strength at each velocity, the hip flexor and extensor of the exercise group were significant (p<0.05) compared to the control group. However, the hip flexor of the control group was only significant at 30%/sec and 120%sec, and the hip extensor of the control group was significant at 30°/sec (p<0.05). As a result of comparing the rate of change in isokinetic muscle strength at each velocity before and after treatment, the flexor was significant at 30°/sec and 120%/sec (p<0.05). Secondly, gait speeds increased after training in both groups; however, there was no significant (p>0.05). The rate of changes in gait speeds was significant (p<0.05). Thirdly, two adults with stroke at grade l+ in the MAS of the control group decreased to grade 1 and there was no difference in the exercise group. However, one of nine adults with stroke in the control group and one of ten adults with stroke in the exercise group increased level from grade 1 to grade l+ and three of four adults with stroke in control group and one of three adults with stroke decreased level from grade l+ to grade 1. There was no significant difference in spasticity between groups (p>0.05).
