Abstract
The purposes of this study were to investigate the factors associated with the characteristics of children with cerebral palsy such as a types, gestational ages, birth weights, causes, MRI findings, and the lack of parents' awareness. The data used in this study were obtained by the therapists through a survey conducted from April 1st to April 16th, 2004. The subjects served for the survey consisted of 719 parents of children with cerebral palsy who had visited hospital and welfare centers located in major cities. Spastic diplegia was identified as the major type of cerebral palsy (47.3%) and the major cause of cerebral palsy was found to be low birth weight due to prematurity (56.5%). We also found that about 57.6% of children with cerebral palsy were born less than 2,500g. This suggests that low birth weight was one of the major causes of children with cerebral palsy. And also, the parents' awareness of children with cerebral palsy was the major factor influencing the early diagnosis. The data showed that 40.8% of diagnosis had been delayed due to the lack of parents' awareness on cerebral palsy.
