Abstract
The purposes of this study was to investigate the characteristics process of diagnosis in children with cerebral palsy. The subjects served for the survey consisted of 719 parents of children with cerebral palsy who had visited hospital and welfare centers located in major cities. The results showed that 40.8% of diagnosis had been delayed due to the lack of parents' awareness on cerebral palsy. We found that the proportion of children with cerebral palsy who had a delayed diagnosis (e.g., a diagnosis of delayed development without neurologic disorders) in early stage was 51.6%. It seems that this prevents children with cerebral palsy from getting necessary treatments in an early stage. This delayed diagnosis is found to be associated with the department of pediatric(60.8%), rehabilitation medicine(23.3%), orthopaedic(4.2%), and neurosurgery (2.0%).
