Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of types of cane on gait in subacute stroke patients. Methods Twelve subacute stroke patients who could walk with cane participated in this study. Berg Balance Scale (BBS) was assessed and adopted patients in below score of 49. Each subject was tested under three different conditions: with mono cane, quad cane and multi cane. Order of testing was randomized. Walking velocity, cadence, step length and time symmetry was measured by GAITRite System. The changes in each variable were evaluated by repeatedmeasures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with posthoc Bonferroni corrections. Results There was significant difference walking velocity and cadence in type of cane (p<.05). Walking velocity and cadence were highest with the multi cane, followed by the quad cane and the mono cane. Step length and step time symmetry were not significantly different in types of cane (p>.05). Conclusion The multi cane was the most efficient on gait with compared with others. Therefore, These results suggest that the stability of multi cane with wide base of support(BOS) improves walking ability for gait training in early stage of rehabilitation.
